The Seven Bowl Judgments

Feb 10, 2021    Mitch Horton

As we continue our journey through Revelation, we now come to Revelation 16, which details the final outpouring of God's wrath upon the earth. This chapter follows the events we have studied so far, including the rise of the antiChrist, the Great Tribulation, and the earlier judgments of God through the seals and trumpets. Now, we see the culmination of God's judgment in the form of the seven bowl judgments.

These judgments are unlike any before them—they are severe, rapid, and complete. Unlike the previous judgments, which affected only portions of the earth, these judgments bring devastation on a global scale. They serve as the final cleansing of the world from sin and rebellion before the return of Jesus to establish His 1,000-year reign.

This is a sobering moment in Revelation. The mercy of God has been extended, the gospel has been preached, and yet humanity—under the influence of the antiChrist—has continued in rebellion. The bowl judgments serve as both justice for the wicked and preparation for the restoration of the earth under Christ’s rule.

Revelation 16 reminds us of the seriousness of rejecting God and the certainty of His judgment. It also assures us that God is in control, bringing history to its intended conclusion. For believers, this passage is a call to remain faithful and to trust in God’s sovereign plan.
